Saree Care and Washing instructions – Cotton, Silk and Chiffon saree.

Saree is an integral part of every Indian women. It is a preferred attire for marriage as well as parties and ceremonies. Nowadays the sarees has evolved with many innovative ideas and style. Even the Indian women are trying new things with the changing of time and fashion trends. Here i’m giving you some tips regarding how you can care and wash your sarees.

1) Cotton Saree

Cotton Sarees are the most preferred sarees for Indian Women. Cotton Sarees are cheaper, more affordable and nominally priced in comparison to most other garments. These are famous in Hyderabad. Cotton sarees are perfect choice for summers as it is breathable, light weight and airy.

Washing instructions:           

1) Before washing a cotton saree for the first time, soak it for 10 to 25 minutes in a bucket of warm water mixed with rock salt. This will ensure that the color latches on the saree and will prevent the saree from “bleeding” color during subsequent washes.

2) Use only a mild detergent to wash a cotton saree. Do not wring it vigorously; instead, hang it over a water tap and allow the excess water to drain off.

3) Hang the saree to dry in a shaded area only as allowing the sun’s rays to directly hit the saree will cause the color to fade.

4) Store the saree in an airy cupboard that is devoid of humidity and direct sunlight.

2) Silk Saree

The Indian silk sarees are known for their lustrous beauty and incomparable variety of designs and colors. A silk sari is a piece of clothing that South Asian women often wear. If you go to a wedding in India, you’ll probably see the bride wearing a red silk sari.  No wedding is complete without the luxurious and expensive sarees made of pure silk. In India, different cities are involved in the production of silk sarees. For instance, there are six central states which are involved in silk production. These are Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Jammu, and Kashmir. These states produce raw mulberry silk of around 97%.

Washing instructions:

1) Never hand-wash Or machine -wash a silk saree.

2) In case the saree gets stained, immediately wipe the stain off with cold water.

3) It is advisable to only dry-clean silk saree.

4) Never hang a silk saree to dry in direct sunlight as doing so will cause the color to fade.

5) Store the saree in a light cotton musline cloth. This will give the saree breathing space and will prevent one saree from sticking to another when kept in a pile.

6) Don’t store the saree in a plastic cover as this will cause the gold embroidery to turn black.

3) Chiffon Saree

Chiffon sarees are great for women looking for a light-weight sarees. Chiffon sarees are semi-sheer and diaphanous which makes it drape well on the body. Chiffon is created by weaving yarns using an alternating method. High-twist yarns are used, which means the yarns are alternatively twisted, resulting in the gentle puckering of the fabric and creating a light crumpling effect in different directions. China is the biggest exporter of finished chiffon fabric. India too is responsible for producing chiffon fabric and exporting raw silk to China. Pakistan and Bangladesh export silk crops to China. France is the country of chiffon’s origin and still produces finest qualities of silk chiffon.

Washing instructions:

1) Silk chiffon needs to be dry cleaned.

2) Polyester chiffon and nylon chiffon can be hand washed or washed in the washing machine on gentle.

3) Use a mild, gentle detergent.

4) Wash with cold water and soak for 30 minutes. Do not leave in the water for any longer because the dye will start to fade.

5) Do not wring. Chiffon can easily lose shape.

6) Lay flat. Don’t use clips as they can create marks on the fabric on the line.

7) Don’t put in the sun. The fabric can fade so avoid direct sunlight.
